Afterall

Afterall is published three times a year by the School of Art at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in Los Angeles and Central St Martins School of Art in London. Afterall Online archives and provides additional content for Afterall.

Afterall Journal provides a forum for the quiet consideration of contemporary art practice. Each issue features five artists. The intention in juxtaposing very different bodies of work is to add to the interpretation and understanding of each practice.

Continuing the practices of the journal, Afterall Online focuses on the work of living individual artists or artist collectives and present thoughtful, in-depth analyses of work. Grounded in a rigorous process of research and review, the editorial team continues to develop an account of contemporary art that encompasses interdisciplinary forms. As with earlier issues, on-line and printed versions press on the limits of art's definition, investigating social practices that question the political efficacy of art, as well as the individual investigations into material and form more often acknowledged in the market.

The web-based version allows Afterall to expand its range and respond rapidly to new events in arts and culture. It offers a special section of online-only content, archived material from past issues and selected essays from the current issue. Afterall Online will be refreshed every two weeks with new material generated in London and Los Angeles on an alternating basis.

Afterall Online provides a location for work that might be better viewed and understood outside of conventional publishing. Material includes interviews with artists concentrating on studio processes, longer theoretical or historical texts that might not easily find a publishing venue because of length or density, and short intros to older artists' writings that are relevant to today's artists.
