Faculty Member Maggie Nelson Receives Prestigious Literary Prize

Maggie Nelson--poet, memoirist, literary critic and scholar--is the recipient of the tenth annual Susanne M. Glasscock Humanities Book Prize for Interdisciplinary Scholarship. Nelson, who is one the faculty of the School of Critical Studies, receives this year’s award for her book Women, the New York School, and Other True Abstractions, published by the University of Iowa Press in 2007.

In Women, the New York School, and Other True Abstractions, Nelson takes a close, critical look at the New York School of Poets, which emerged after the Second World War. She focuses on the movement’s women poets and their collaborative role in expanding the techniques and critiques of New York’s artistic avant-garde as they also offered challenges to its aesthetic strategies.

Nelson will receive the award and make a presentation early in 2009. The Glasscock Book Prize, first awarded in 1999, was originated by the Texas A&M Center for Humanities
