Ellen Birrell is the Co-founder, Publisher, and an Editor of X-TRA, a Contemporary Art Quarterly, currently celebrating its tenth year. Founded by visual artists in Los Angeles, X-TRA has recently been awarded a Warhol Foundation Grant for Criticism. You can find the magazine online at www.x-traonline.org. Since moving to a lemon farm in 2005, Birrell has been photographing deviant lemons, writing about farming and working on starting an artist’s residency at her farm, Deep End. Some of her deviant produce has recently appeared at Artists’ Space, the Fruit issue of Cabinet, and at SLBG in LA. A forthcoming article about farming and weather, “Chamber of Commerce Weather,” will appear in Artspace published in Auckland, New Zealand. She has served on the faculty at CalArts since 1991.
