Production Manager -- Temporary

This temporary position reports to the Director of Communications and Publications and is responsible for management and production of all CalArts print and electronic publications and photographic services. Primary responsibilities include the tracking of multiple projects simultaneously in varying stages of writing, design, photography, pre-production, delivery, and mailing or posting online.
Responsibilities:
- Assist the Director of Communications and Publications with schedules and budgets for all of the Institute’s print and web communications and photography.
- Collaborate with and assist the Art Director, graphic designers, photographers, web manager and student interns.
- Monitor and track the progress of all print and electronic publishing projects through successive phases of writing, design, production, and printing or posting, to ensure that delivery is on schedule, on budget and meets Institute standards of excellent quality.
- Create and maintain an accurate database that reflects the history of each print and electronic publication, and photographic project, from initial request through delivery.
- Manage the distribution of published materials with mail houses, post office, online (e-newsletters), on and off campus.
- Procurement including solicitation and management of bids from vendors.
- Work with Institute-wide partners to establish placement schedules for advertisements.
- Recharge all printing and production costs to appropriate departments.
- Maintain an archive of printed publications.
- Maintain production resources as well as general office supplies for the Communications and Publications department.
- Work with the Institute’s departmental web contacts to facilitate accurate updating of online information.
Requirements:
- Minimum five years experience in print communications or production management.
- Self-motivated and capable of multi-tasking with a sense of urgency dictated by deadlines and budgetary constraints. Ability to take initiative, be flexible, problem solve, detail oriented and professional.
- Demonstrated professional experience in print and electronic design and publishing. Conversant in the vocabularies of graphic and electronic design.
- Experience working with web site content management systems.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications. Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and basic HTML a plus.
- Strong interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate and relate to individuals at management and administrative levels.
- Ability to create and manage budgets.
- Strong commitment to customer service excellence.
- Ability to work occasional weekends and evening hours.
