Integrated Media Program in Photography and Media
MFA Only
A supplement to many MFA programs at CalArts, the Integrated Media (IM) Program is geared for students whose creative work with technology, in particular digital media, extends beyond their original disciplines. Graduate students from all six schools at CalArts enroll in this program in order to integrate multiple media and disciplines into new forms of expression.
Configured as an interdisciplinary arts laboratory, IM combines art, science and technology with a view toward developing fresh creative strategies. The program supports a wide range of projects involving performative and environmental installations, video, sound, music, robotics, gaming, programming, interactivity, computer graphics and the Internet.
School of Art students in this program must fulfill the requirements of either the MFA Program in Art or the MFA Program in Photography and Media. In addition, they must complete a minimum of six IM courses (one seminar, one critique class and four project classes) and carry out a specific IM project during each year of residency. Further coursework can include independent studies and elective courses on technical and theoretical subjects.
Students interested in this course of study are expected to show the level of artistic ability required for admission to the MFA programs in Art or Photography and Media. They must also demonstrate significant previous experience with digital technologies and interdisciplinary work.
